Why to Watch - Funny Games (1997)

Do you want to feel helpless for almost 2 hours? Stare at you TV and wish you could intervene? Well this is the movie for you. It’s truly an odd viewing experience and perfectly fits the “give me anxiety” category. But keep in mind, the 1997 version has subtitles. If you want to watch the US shot-for-shot remake in English from 2007, go ahead, it’s considered on par with the original.

Director: Michael HanekeWriter: Michael HanekeStars: Susanne Lothar, Ulrich Mühe, Arno FrischSummary: Two seemingly well-educated young men, who call each other Paul and Peter among other names, approach a family on vacation. They are, apparently, friends of the neighbors, and, at the beginning, their true intentions are not known, but soon, the family is imprisoned and tortured in its own house violently, which the viewers are forced mostly to imagine and to share a certain complicity with the criminals. It might be some kind of game with the lives of husband, wife, son, and dog, but why are they doing it? —Luis Canau <luis.canau@mail.EUnet.pt>
